A candidate vying to become Hong Kong’s next leader has said that Beijing will help ensure the city’s safety if he wins the race.

Tony Kan, the sole candidate to declare so far, told the South China Morning Post on Thursday that he had sought and received a pledge of support from the central government in Beijing to help the city maintain its stability and prosperity.
