Two Southern California fathers are suing a halfway house and its parent company, alleging their sons, both recovering from addiction, returned home from the program and died within days from fentanyl overdoses.
The lawsuits, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, allege the halfway house, Oxford House, and its parent company, Oxford House, Inc., failed to provide their sons with adequate addiction treatment, supervision and support.
The lawsuits allege that the halfway houses are not licensed or regulated by the state of California and that they do not provide adequate medical or mental health care.
The lawsuits also allege that the halfway houses do not provide adequate supervision of their residents and that they do not do enough to prevent residents from using drugs and alcohol.
The lawsuits are seeking unspecified damages.
Oxford House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The lawsuits come as the nation grapples with an opioid crisis that has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people in recent years.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 107,000 people died from drug overdoses in the United States in 2021.
Of those deaths, more than 70,000 involved opioids.
The lawsuits allege that Oxford House is part of the problem.
The lawsuits allege that Oxford House’s halfway houses are not doing enough to help people recover from addiction and that they are actually putting people at risk of overdose.
The lawsuits are seeking to hold Oxford House accountable for the deaths of the two men.
The lawsuits are also seeking to force Oxford House to change its practices and to provide better care for its residents.
The lawsuits are a reminder of the dangers of addiction and the importance of getting help from qualified professionals. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, please reach out for help.
