Health: What We Do: Equity and Babies: Advancing the Line

Advancing the line: The goal of improving equitable health outcomes for babies born to Black women in Minneapolis
The line is an imaginary marker drawn from the intersection of Nicollet Avenue and 38th Street in Minneapolis. To the west of the line, babies born to Black mothers face some of the worst health outcomes in the nation. But just east of the line, in a neighborhood called Seward, those same babies have dramatically better health outcomes.
Dr. Archelle Georgiou, an assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, is working to understand why there’s such a drastic difference in outcomes for babies born to Black mothers living on either side of the line and to work toward health equity for all babies in Minneapolis.
